Breaest cancer and medical insurance!?

Ok tomorrow I am going to the doctor to have a lump in my breast checked. Right now I am 20 years old, on my parents health insurance. So the insurance will cover anything that goes wrong until I am married. (If I have cancer) but I am getting married in 2 months and while health insurance IS something we are willing to pay for, I am worried that we will no longer be approved. If the lump comes out that it is NOT cancer we will be fine, but if it is I am very scarred we will be turned down and will have to pay for everything out of pocket. Does anyone have any words of wisdom, or went through something similar!?

At age 20 it is unlikely that you have developed breast cancer. So best wishes for getting a clear report from the doctor.

If you live in America, then you must beware when changing insurance companies. The "pre-existing condition clause" is the for-profit health insurance industry’ s big money maker, but means bad news for consumers.

The "pre-existing condition clause" exempts health insurance companies from covering any condition that a person had before enrolling with their new policy. For example, if something is actually wrong when you go to the doctor this week, then when you try to change insurers next week your new policy will NOT cover that "pre-existing condition".. Frankly, if you have a serious condition, no insurance company will even offer you a new policy.

Note that most health insurance policies do not even cover serious conditions discovered during the first 1 to 2 years the policy is active. This is another way the health insurance companies make money and ordinary people are abused.

America has a dangerously flawed for-profit health insurance system. Policyholders are routinely harmed its pre-existing condition clauses, underpayment for services, and denial of services.

I agree with Sherman (probably 100% of the time so far) that you are way too young for it to be breast cancer so it is probably not a problem. If it were breast cancer by some very long shot then I would take care of it under your folks health care coverage and not marry until the treatments are over.

But it is like a very very long shot that it is cancer. You would have a better chance of buying a dollar ticket and winning the lottery than it being cancer.

But you bring up a very valid point. Without a national health coverage something like breast cancer can break the bank. In fact there have been people that have gone through treatments and then get their quarterly check-ups but they no longer have their jobs.

So they cannot afford a $3,000 MRI test and they fore-go it. Instead of being on the pro-active about after treatment they are taking a chance that the cancer has not returned because nobody has that kind of money.

Expense so far for battling breast cancer for us is over $300,000. With insurance we still paid over $10,000 out of pocket. And we are now in a new year and needing to pay another $3,000. before our insurance fully kicks in just for after treatments.

Breast cancer is expensive to fight, if you were in your forties and had this concern you would probably be having to make a tough decision. Hopefully, something will be done and citizens of the most powerful country in the world will not have to miss any testing done because they cannot afford it.

Cancer is tough to beat period and not having money to fight it makes it deadly.
