I am a previous cancer patient. I have been in remission for almost 8 years now I have a lump w/ no insurance!?

I have a marble size lump on the back of my neck. I am currently unemployed due to job loss with the economy and it has been difficult to find work. How can I get the medical attention I need with out insurance I am freaking out. I am only 23 years old as of tomorrow and have been feeling very ill. Anyone know my options?… Without putting me into serios debt?

    Are you in the states?

How long have you been unemployeed? Do you qualify for COBRA coverage? (COBRA is a program where you’d pay the portion of your health insurace… that your former employer paid … and you’ll have all of the same benefits … I am not sure how long you can get COBRA coverage for, but you should contact human resources at your old job to determine if they can put you in contact with someone who knows)

Alternatively, you can go to a low-cost walk in clinic… and discuss what is going on and see if they can see you for a reasonable fee.

OR… you can just call your regular family doctor and explain your situation. There was one time, after I graduated from college .. and before my insuarnce kicked in from my new job … I was living in NYC right after the sept.11 attacks … I had what was called "World Trade Center Cough" … which was a persistent cough and a serious infection. I went to my doctor … who examined me for $20, wrote me a prescription that she knew would cost $12 … and I was all set. I was suprised by that, but, many doctors are willing to work with you.

If you are in the states, you may also qualify for medicaid. Medicaid coverage will give you a reasonable assitance with seeing doctors and treatment options.

… but whatever you do …don’t sit home worrying about the lump! Don’t worry about money … your life is much more valuable than a dollar amount!!! Start making phone calls tomorrow, and i’m sure you’ll be able to get an appointment soon!.

I’m wishing the best for you… and hoping that you can enjoy a-bit of your birthday!

You are an American without health care due to insurance problems. I am sorry for your troubles, for they are all too common in the States.

Contact the American Cancer Society at 1-800-ACS-2345 and explain your situation. Their advisers have access to a comprehensive database of governmental and other health programs. They can advise you on eligibility criteria and how to apply for Medicaid, state insurance pools, low and no cost health screening, and other services.

Please do not ignore or delay medical treatment. The best weapon against cancer is early detection and treatment. Support political efforts to establish a national health program in the United States. Link to Physicians for a National Health Plan.
