A tithe is 10% of what she earns. If she lost her job, she isn’t earning anything. 10% of nothing is nothing.

Really. Has her Pastor litterally told her she has to pay or she’s kicked out. Sorry, that’s not the way churches operate.

You should ask her priest/pastor that question because it sounds to me like your mom needs to find another church.

They should be assisting her financially out of the storehouse. If they have not even offered anyn help then they are selfish pharisees and I would find another church family that truly cares.

And why not leave said church? You can’t read the bible at home?

Churches exist as a place for people to compare clothes and brag about their personal success to each other.

Edit: At least that’s what I see when I go gorilla massing at various churches. Always about hats and how smart their kids are. The pre and post mass socializing is longer than the mass itself. It’s hilarious.

A church is like any other business. They are in it just for the money. That is why lots of people may believe but they don’t attend church.

The person who runs this doesnt sound nice, find a new church. Or speak to your Moms friends from church and get them to speak to the person who runs it, gang up on him.

I don’t know of any church that would require her to pay anything under those conditions.

when you give to the church your giving back what rightfully belongs to god.

example: i gave a dollar of MY money to my church to see if i would be rewarded, later that day my grandmother gave me 100 dollars. im not saying give while thinking youll get something in return but give to the church and pray.

That is part of the church teaching… that giving to others will ensure you will achieve success, and the more you give the more you get back.

Ever see how big and nice looking some of these churches have gotten? Or how nicely dressed some of these "humble" servants of god are?

because its god’s word … no matter what even if your suddenly poor (natural disaster,etc.) they still pays there tithes…. if you run out of cash or even if you don’t GOD WILL PROVIDE…

Everything, including the next breath we breathe belongs to Him. God does not need money-Walmart needs your money. But if we trust Him, He promises to provide beyond our expectation. Cancer, job loss, death and a billion other tragedies will happen to all, whether one obeys or not. The point is that He is greater than any suffering, and through Him we can overcome anything. We are far better off to trust and obey than to become self-absorbed. I hope things become better for you. Everyone goes through trials by fire.

tithing is not in the new covenant paul spent two chapters in 2 corinthians 8, 9 on free will giving not out of what we don’t have but what we do have, any one who is teaching tithing i think their preist is levi not Jesus.

Malachi 3:10 states:
Bring the whole tithe into the storehouse, that there may be food in my house. Test me in this," says the LORD Almighty, "and see if I will not throw open the floodgates of heaven and pour out so much blessing that you will not have room enough for it.

In order to have blessings we must be obedient. According to this scripture paying her tithing will unleash blessings so much that there is not enough room to receive it. If she has faith and does what is commanded she will be blessed. If she does not, she forfeits whatever blessing she would have received.

Did she fill out one of those dang pledge cards?

Just have her cancel it.

I’ve never had pressure from my church to tithe. The most they do is send a card every year saying how much one "should" give based on salary. If I never tithed, they wouldn’t even mention it.

Good question. The church may still insist she pay her tithe, but God sure doesn’t. In fact, I do not even believe tithing is Biblical as it is taught in churches today, but that is an other matter. I would tell that church to mind its own business. Even though I am a Christian and I do give to my church I don’t believe in "guilty giving". Most church preach "guilty giving". I think the church should be giving to your mother.

If I can’t live on 90% of my income, I won’t be able to live on that extra 10% either.

Tithing is a law of principle about learning to humble yourself before God.

If she was so broke she could take her bills to the Bishop and more than likely get help with paying them, so dont make any asinine assumptions about the church being a money-maker. The church spends MILLIONS helping those less fortunate.

If this is the case, then her church is a church of wolves.

The biblical tithe was an old covenant requirement. The old covenant was a "contract" between the two parties, God and Israel. Christians were never a party to that covenant, and that covenant ended upon the death of Jesus Christ on the cross, seeing as Jesus is identified as the God of the old covenant/testament. Covenants end upon the death of either party to a covenant, as explained by the apostle Paul in Romans chapter 7, where he uses a marriage covenant to explain this.

A tithe was the tenth of the increase of produce and livestock. No one was ever commanded to tithe on their wages. Only land owners who had livestock and crops tithed.

Old covenant points of law were not to come forward into the new covenant. To do so was described as being a subversion of the Christian’s soul as brought out in Acts 15.

A Christian’s giving to a ministry or church was never to be compulsory. Only through free will offerings were ministers supported. Paul, in I Corinthians 9, makes his case that those who preached the gospel were to live of the gospel. Paul did not use tithing as a means of justifying support. Rather, Paul used the example of not muzzling the ox that treads out the grain as justification.

Why then would a ministry teach compulsory tithing of wages?

Jesus warned his followers that there would come religious leaders who would declare rightly He was the Christ, then proceed to deceive people. These deceivers are also described as being deceived themselves, as well as being wolves in sheep’s clothing who do not spare the flock. Tithing serves this perfectly. Most people do not understand what a tithe really is, and most people do not understand the covenants and the difference between the old and the new. The deceivers take advantage of people’s ignorance regarding the law and a Christian’s relationship with God. The one that teaches tithing paints a picture of a God that demands they tithe. To neglect to tithe is seen as being disobedient to God; robbing God. To tithe is seen as being pleasing to God, and that God will bless those who do so. Tithing is therefore put forth as being a matter of faith when in actuality tithing has nothing to do with faith. Paul states in his writings that the law is not of faith. You don’t see these ministers who propound tithing living by faith that God will support them through the free_will offerings of their flocks.

It is not uncommon for ministers and lay people alike to offer up justifications when they alter Scripture and the application of Scripture. But there is never a justification for taking the very inspired word of God and altering it so suit one’s "needs" or the "changing times." The old covenant was designed with Israel in mind and their economy. To try and force-fit tithing into another culture and another time is unwarranted. You cannot put the new wine (new covenant) into the old wineskin (old covenant).

So what happens when one tithes, but they are not blessed financially? What is concluded if they experience further financial difficulties? It is their fault. They are lacking in faith. It is a no win situation for the poor person who was convinced by their ministry they have to tithe in order to be blessed by God.

So ingrained is tithing now in the Christian psyche that there are few who are willing to truly step out in faith and abandon old covenant points of law that bring people back under the bondage of that law. (Galatians 5:1) A Christian lives by the law of faith, also known as the law of liberty. It is a law where one is freed from the obligations of the old covenant letter of the law.
