possible cancer spot, but no insurance :(?

My wife has a spot on her back that is slowly growing and changing in color, but we don’t have any medical insurance or money right now. What should we do, where should we go, who should we see? I’m scared… are there doctors that help with this kind of stuff as a charity?

P.S. – we live in the Phoenix area.

What type of spot are you talking about . . you mean a mole? Or is this a lump? In either case it is too late for you to worry about health insurance now . . your wife needs medical attention and a diagnosis one way or the other. If this is cancer than the sooner it is removed and treated than the easier it is to ‘cure’ and . . the LESS expensive it will be if you are paying out of pocket. The longer you wait the more progessed cancer becomes and the more costly it becomes to treat. So you are not doing yourself any favors or saving money by waiting . . especially if it turns out to be a malignancy. Take your wife to the doctor . . have the spot diagnosed . . it just may mean a simple removal in the doctors office and no further treatments right now. But do not wait. Doctors are willing to work out payment plans with you if that is necessary.

The ACS offers some good ideas and resources for those who have financial or health insurance issues:
