There are many county, state and federal programs to treat the indigent. No one has to "just die".

Many do just die. But generally hospitals have to treat indigent patients. Such debts are made up by charging insured patients more.

Pretty much that was the case some years ago, but there is now a federal law that says that any hospital that receives federal funds cannot turn a patient away due to a lack of ability to pay. So the cancer patient will be cared for – and in fact, will have already begun to receive care, because the patient must have seen a physician in order to receive the diagnosis of cancer…

When I ended up in hospital by way of ambulance after a seizure, I was told I had a brain tumor. I told dr I didn’t know my insurance situation because my husband had changed jobs and our insurance ended the day before my surgery. He said the last thing I needed to worry about was my insurance. The most important thing was getting that tumor out of my head. Thankfully, we continued my insurance through COBRA. A hospital is not going to deny you treatment.

I was in this position and I was able to get medicaid. There are many programs that will help those diagnosed with cancer to help to get them treatment. There are also charity hospitals that provide free care and free medicines and free treatments, all you have to do is find them. All of these programs are available through the government, depending on where you live you can get it through the county or through state funding, I am not familiar with each state’s laws. I know that no one has to just die. Also, the american cancer society and other organizations has resources and references that can help all people, including the medical insurance indigent population.

If you are so sick that you would die without treatment, a hospital has to take you, paying or not.

You have to apply for disability status with social security in order to get Medicare. On Medicare, most things are paid. It takes a while.

It must be aweful to have the uncertainty when you are sick.

That happened to a friend of mine. He developed throat cancer. It was very advanced when it was diagnosed. He applied for Social Security Disability Insurance, and got it. But by the time he got it, he died.
