What should we do? Husband just got laid off, No health insurance after 26 weeks, newborn and possible cancer.?
->
Please read my story. What should we do after the 26 weeks? read the whole thing, that way you know the whole story. I am trying not to rant. I am seriously asking this questions. Are there any programs out there that aren’t going to break us? I wish we could add this to more than a couple categories, that would be most effective.
I recently had some very bad news and I am sitting here thinking about it when I got a flyer in the mail that is against the health reform bill. I have been a supporter of the bill since at least seven years ago, when I turned 18 and realized that real life isnt what they make it out to be. I have never been so passionate about anything political in all my life. I just always said I will never discuss politics or religion with anyone, didn’t want to argue. I was disgusted with Mr. Grassley’s comments on Englands health care system. I have never been so ashamed to be from Iowa. I have lived here my whole life. I just wanted to post this because this bill has always meant a lot to me, but suddenly it means even more. I just wish that the people against it, would see the basic human side and not just whether or not it adds to the deficit or "gov’t involved in our health care". Which is another argument altogether, because neither are true. Anyway I just wanted to share this because I am lost and confused. I am saddened and deeply hurt by a lot of things right now that I could make a gigantic list and never sum up my feelings at the moment.
Hello, my name is Amanda. I live in Iowa and have been deeply affected by the John Deere Harvester Works Layoffs in East Moline, Ill. For 26 weeks our health insurance will be in effect to cover our doctor bills for my current pregnancy and delivery. For 26 weeks we will have a sub-pay and unemployment benefits. After that we will be facing low unemployment income and and will have newborn baby. Now also, my doctors are concearned that I have cervical cancer. They are doing a biopsy as soon as the baby is born. Either way I will be requiring some sort of treatment.
So, In 26 weeks I will have an 8 week old infant, possibility of cervical cancer and no health insurance. My husband got laid off two days ago with call back rights for 2 years. This was very unexpected and they are not giving any information on it. They blame the economy, yet their sales are just fine. So give me an answer of what to do? He made too much money for us to qualify for medicaid. Hawk-I (healthy and well kids in Iowa) will cover the baby and 5 year old. But what about me and the very real facing of cervical cancer. we cannot afford to pay dr bills on unemployment, unless we went hungry or became homeless. The same for buying health insurance outright. Each month we will have to pay really high premiums for a family of 4 and then go back and forth each month of which household bills to pay.
With that being said… Any suggestions?????? Everyone who already has health insurance or is pretty healthy says that they have the answer without having to face this kind of possibility… it saddens me quite a bit. the Public option would be best for our family right now. What do you suggest us to do Mr. Grassley? There is nothing coming to my mind at the moment to make this ok. If the public option was available, it would be a simple answer. The possibility of him finding a job that offers health insurance that quickly is slim to none in our area. We cannot move out of the area because I have a custody agreement in place for my 5 year old. If I moved out of the area then I would lose visitation rights for my daughter.
I would appreciate your thoughts on this, as I already know how you feel about the Health care reform bill. I understand that we do not wish to add to the deficit, but I think that the human side of this bill should be considered most importantly. Our family does not have time to wait.
Thank you for any time you chose to spend on my message/letter.
Amanda
If anyone has any answers for us, please give them. But do not be harsh, I am already depressed and full of anxiety. Just real answers from both sides Please!
as i see it, no answers. Dont assume I dont know anything about anything. And quite obviously i do have problems, hence my question. You tell me not assume something I dont know about, please dont do the same. I was never married before. and beyond what I wrote here, you know nothing about my situation. I just wanted to know if anyone had any ideas for us. not to tell me we are pieces of shit… lol thanks a lot for being compassionate..
Yeah, we wouldn’t qualify for either WIC or Medicaid because of our unemployment benefits are too high. Here, it is based on amount of income the household has no matter where it comes from.

well, here’s what I think…you may not like it, but it’s just my honest opinion. this letter will probably be ignored because it’s not well written at all. it’s not about the issue, it’s about your issues. it’s not the governments problem that you have a custody case and can’t move. and that’s not your husband’s problem either, he should be able to go get a job, even if it’s in a different area to do what he needs to to support his family. and you can work at Starbucks part-time and get health insurance through them. a lot of companies offer this. if he is on un-employment and you are pregnant you should be able to get Medicaid no problem.

I dont have any real answers for you other then you probably qualify for medicare and you should look into WICS (woman infants and children)…but this is when this issue hits home and you wonder why the republicans cannot seem to empathize with anyone on this issue. they are mostly in the pockets of the insurance industry and their golden goose might get it’s neck wrung. what’s amazing is that the very people that this bill might help are some of the ones protesting it! go figure, good luck and god bless…
sorry, i hope your luck turns around soon…….don’t listen to assholes here….. some people are just jerks and don’t get anything until something bad happens to them…then it’s ‘oh woe is me!! someone help me!’

First of all, the USA is ranked number 37, by the world health organization, the UK is number 18. Second of all, even if she can get health insurance from starbucks, there is a clause called PRE-EXISTING CONDITIONS!!! Look, nobody has a perfect life, so stop assuming that she brought this upon herself. By the looks of you people answering this, I can tell you are conservatives. So, I ask you, do you rather she aborts? If you people actually read all of this, you will see that her husband got laid off. Now before you say get a job, come to the Quad Cities. The economy of the Quad Cities is pretty shitty. So do not assume. Also, senator Grassley has taken in over 2.9 million dollars from insurance companies. And insurancr companies deny people treatment all the time. Its time you people stopped listening to conservative radio and a certain half term governor who can see Russia from her front porch!!!!

You have 26 weeks to find a job or your spouse tofind one which will give you time for insurance to kick in or to buy a plan. Thats all there is to it. You have to take actiob now to provide for your family just like the majority of the country does.

I was born in england, lived there for the first 13 years of my life, during that time i had medical care, my family never had to worry about that. i had problems with my hearing, i was not learning to speak very well and i am thankful for the fact that i was able to have operations for free that enabled me to hear and learn how to speak and socialize like other children.
my experience.
more experience, i got laid off a few months after having a beautiful baby boy. the state paid for the pregnancy care and delivery although we didnt know we were pregnant for 30 weeks it wasn’t an issue when we found out. after i got laid off my wife spent alot of time trying to get us medical benefits, one day we just get a letter in the mail saying you qualify for emergency medical care, it covers absolutely everything better than any other insurance plan ive seen.
my child and my family were able to get medical for a year.
the thought of losing medical is scary, i got a new job right after my son was born because they offered medical, and then got laid off, if i wasn’t so worried about medical i would have kept my old job and been better off.
but, it is worth fighting for your rights. see if you apply for medical through the state, hopefully there is some sort of "emergency medical" plan you can get on at least for the mean time while you are pregnant, when they say no which they did for us, you apply again, and again, and eventually someone will review it and say oh yeah that makes sense.
if you figure out what you need to do for medical and you find that your other benefits co-inside with that, well… im not on un employment, i don’t get any money. and for that, for the mean time, i work under the table. its awful and wrong, but thats the state of things.
i guess what i wanted to say to you when i read this is, im am so sorry to hear that you are going through such troubled times, many people are in the same or similar situation right now. keep fighting for your family, its tough right now, and there are many odds against you, learn what they are, play the system if you have to, just take care of your family, no one else is going to want to do that for you and it wont happen if you give up.
its a crazy system and the citizens of the united states should not be experiencing this kind of hardship, we are supposed to be great, wheres the greatness in an infant losing his mother to cervical cancer because she can’t get help?

Contact your local Social Services. You may not qualify but they might have information regarding programs available. Also, check and see if there are any free clinics in your area. You may have to find them in larger cities but if you have a computer you should be able to locate them. Your infant might be eligible for the S-CHIP program. As for your medical problems, sometimes there are programs available for women in your financial difficulties. If there are any teaching hospitals close by they frequently have programs available for low income people. I was able to get a mammogram through a women’s program when I had no health insurance. Ask around. Sometimes local churches have help available. Catholic charities is one. You don’t have to be Catholic to get help. Also, call your local state representative or senator. Their offices might have access to programs to help and let them know that you support health care reform.
Good luck. You’re one of the prime examples as to why we need a national health care program.
